SUPER FALCONS GETS ENGLAND FOR ROUND OF 16 CLASH, TO EARN $60,000 PER PLAYER

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have had one recovery session since their goalless draw against The Republic of Ireland on Monday secured passage to the next round of the Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerian interests had its eyes on today’s Group D final round of matches to see who finishes top – as fate will have it England’s Lionesses emerged winners of that Group setting up a “ROUND OF 16” clash in Lang Park, Brisbane on 7 August kickoff at 08:30.

There’s a feeling the fixture could have been avoided at this early stage of the knockout round despite it being a mouth-watering contest for fans and neutrals – The European Champions are up against Africa’s finest women’s team who are on a 7-match-unbeaten run.

Nigeria and England possess a plethora of stars whose performances have caught the eye so far in Australia and New Zealand. Lauren James has shone with spectacular goals and Alessia Russo’s fine displays have helped their team to 3 wins from Group D while Chiamaka Nnadozie and Tony Payne put in top performances as the Falcons negotiated a “group of death” in an assured manner.

The squabble between the Head coach Randy Waldrum and the Nigeria Football Federation – NFF before the start of the tournament seems to be good history with assured displays and results of the Falcons sealing the lips of naysayers.

With the first round almost concluded teams who progressed to the knockout rounds will now enjoy an additional financial allocation per player after the initial $30,000 participation fee earned in the group stages for the Women’s World Cup the round of 16 will see all the players earn $60,000 from FIFA.

The money is not going directly from FIFA to the players. What FIFA is promising is that the NFF cannot touch the money sent to them to pass on to the players. They have ring-fenced the money and Gelson Fernandes, the FIFA Director for Africa, will see to it that the NFF pays this prize money to the Super Falcons players.

“I know that things have been tough. We have to face the realities of Nigeria. It pains me a lot. It’s because of you [the Super Falcons] that for the first time, the prize money has been ring-fenced in the history of FIFA, to ensure that it goes to you.” – FIFA Secretary-General Fatma Samoura said in Brisbane.
