Canadian Soccer Women’s National Team Head Coach Bev Priestman has released a final 23 women’s squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Portland Thorns FC and National team Captain Christian Sinclair set for her 6th Women’s World Cup appearance headlines a group of veterans, experienced, and youths with an average age of 27 years.
Sophie Schmidt, Kadeish Buchanan, Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence, and Janine Beckie all have World Cup experiences under their belt. Evelyne Viens and 18-year-old Olivia Smith are first-timers while Clarissa Larisey misses out despite performing impressively for BK Hacken last season.
“I’m proud to name this dynamic and exciting 23-player roster,” said Bev Priestman. “I know every single person has given their all to make this squad. It’s a great mix of veterans, experienced and new players who can all bring something different this summer.”
“I’m naturally devastated for the players who have missed out, especially due to injuries, but I know every player will be with us on our journey” added Priestman.
Canada made history when they won the Gold medal in football at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics games and will aim for the top prize in the first 32-team tournament in the Gold Coast.
The North Americans begin their group B campaign against 11-time African Champions Nigeria at the Melbourne rectangular park on Friday 21 July with further matches against the Republic of Ireland in Perth on Wednesday 26 July and co-host Australia on Monday 31 July in Melbourne.
