SEE THE FOUR COUNTRIES FAVORED TO WIN AFCON 2024
David Oku
24 teams battle for supremacy in AFCON 2023 [to be played in 2024] in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In my estimation, these 4 teams will make the biggest impact:
1. Cameroon 🇨🇲 [Allez Les Lions 🦁] – “Strong, Powerful, and technical…” Cameroon’s stock has risen incredibly in the game. The last time they won the AFCON was in 2017 but the current flock of players reignites hopes of a triumph on the continent again in 4 months. Not many nations can match the technical quality of players that the Central Africans possess. Andre Onana is the best in his position in the World, Mbuemo is gifted on the wings, Anguisaa locomotes the team through the middle, and Vincent Abubakar scores for fun even against the most difficult opponents. If Cameroon play to their full potential then they’ll smile home with a 6th AFCON trophy.🏆
2. Senegal 🇸🇳 [Lions 🦁 of Terranga] – “Champions have to go out there and prove themselves again…” Despite the injury disruption before their FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar Senegal proved their mettle and made the next round of the tournament. On the continent, the Aliou Cisse-led team strolled through their qualification group for the AFCON and will be a force to reckon with in Ivory Coast again. The impact of a local coach on their teams cannot be overlooked and Senegal like Cameroon has benefitted immensely from having a homegrown gaffer. Mane, Koulibailly, Amad, and Aurier are players at the peak of their powers.
3. Nigeria 🇳🇬 [Super Eagles 🦅] – “Finding the right balance continues to stall the Eagles…” Nigeria has all it takes to triumph in Ivory Coast next year but just like in previous editions might buckle under pressure. As of today, the Super Eagles have the largest number of players in good form for their club sides. However, the lack of cohesion and inability of the coaching crew to find the right balance during games continues to be the undoing of the team. VO9, SChukwueze, Awoniyi, Bassey Calvin, and Moses Simon ‘Daddy’ are all in great form and the onus will be on them to fire Nigeria to its 4th title, and anything short of a title win will be regarded as a colossal failure.

4. Morocco 🇲🇦 [Atlas Lions] – “Can Morroco perform again one year after taking the World Cup by storm?…” They were the toast of Africa and neutrals during the global meeting last year. A semifinal berth was achieved by a determined group that changed the narrative for African teams on the World stage. Morocco’s biggest strength was its quick interpretation of opponents’ tactics and response to it. Not many teams will survive at the AFCON if Morocco plays with that sort of intensity, and gusto as we saw at the World Cup. Amaraabat, Ziech, Hakimi, and Bounou possess immense quality and will be too hot to handle.
