FIVE TACTICAL CONCLUSIONS OBSERVED FROM THE SUPER FALCONS DEFEAT BY SOUTH AFRICA

David Oku

1. The flexibility in changing tactics, especially in the first half should have been carried out by the technical crew of the falcons even in the first 10-15 minutes tactics can be reshuffled or changed – strategically the South African team sat deep to absorb pressure and thrive on long balls and counter stacks.

2. The defence line of the Falcons lacks organization especially stretched via long balls threats, offside organization and zonal marking

Rashedat Ajibade

3. It was clear the South African team focused on the weakest link in the Nigerian team the right flank and the falcon’s right full back and right wing were exposed with passes that destabilized the falcon’s defence

4. There was no synergy in building and creating clear-cut chances from midfield to attack -the falcon’s team failed to break down a compact defence line.

a. They need a robust creative midfield passing mobility.

b. Wing play was not connective, the bulk of the crosses from the flank was poor

c. Even in tight spaces/ situations the falcons struggle with 1v1 and 2 v 1 situations – the South Africans won the bulk of the ball duels

5. Substitution from the Technical crew of the falcons came late, immediate and impactful changes should come earlier, especially after a goalless first half
