IPOB Leader Killed in Military Raid on Mmiata Anam, Anambra State
By Austine Ikeh
Mmiata Anam, Anambra State – A deadly military operation in Mmiata Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area, has left one man dead and another narrowly escaping with his life. The raid, carried yesterday being July 23, 2023, by a joint team of the Nigerian Army, Police, and Department of State Services (DSS), targeted suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) during a meeting in the community.
According to eyewitness accounts, security operatives stormed a residence where IPOB members were allegedly gathered, opening fire in an attempt to arrest key figures. In the ensuing chaos, Mr. Ojiakor Ide Udoji, a prominent IPOB leader in Mmiata, was shot and killed by the military. His younger brother, Udoji Fidelis Chidozie, managed to escape, evading capture.
Local sources claim that Mr. Udoji was the primary target of the operation due to his influential role in the IPOB movement within the community. The circumstances surrounding his killing have sparked outrage, with residents accusing security forces of extrajudicial execution rather than a lawful arrest.
The attack is the latest in a series of crackdowns on pro-Biafra activists in the Southeast, raising concerns over the Nigerian government’s handling of separatist movements. Human rights groups have long condemned the use of excessive force against IPOB members, calling for accountability and justice.
Meanwhile, tension remains high in Mmiata Anam, as residents fear further raids and reprisals in the wake of Udoji’s killing. IPOB supporters continue to demand answers, insisting that their struggle for self-determination will not be silenced by government repression.
