The United Nations General Assembly in a resolution of December 18, 2007 established the International Day of Rural Women to be celebrated on 15 October yearly, with an aim to promote gender equality and empower rural women.
The theme of 2021 is “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All”. The planet has the capacity to provide sufficient food for its inhabitants, but the scourge of Covid19 pandemic, along with climate crises has caused the world to experience hunger and food insecurity. In 2020, 2.37billion people did not have enough food to eat, which is 20% more than in 2019.
Rural women and girls play essential role in global food system from crops production to the processing, preparation and distribution of food. They feed their families, communities and the world at large. By this, they help to improve food security and eradicate rural poverty. A report by the UN reveals that women make up 40% of total agricultural labour force in developing countries, but they do not enjoy equal share and rights as their male counterparts.
At NOA Abia State, we realise that when rural women are sufficiently empowered and free from discrimination, it will help rebuild the broken global food system and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs Goal 2- Zero Hunger and Goal 5- Gender Equality.
NOA Abia is playing it’s role to recognise and support rural women, what are you doing?
