INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY 2021
Lady Dr. Ngozi Okechukwu, State Director, NOA Abia
The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic globally during the past year reversed decades of progress made in the fight against poverty and extreme poverty. With statistics showing that between 88 and 115 million people were thrown into poverty as a result of the pandemic and the figure is expected to increase in 2021 to between 143 and 163 million, according to World Bank, with majority of the new cases being from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. This increase in poverty caused by the pandemic, is as a result of pre-existing limitations that was made worse by the pandemic, where restrictions imposed to curb the spread often further pushed them into poverty.
The theme of 2021 is centred around “Building forward together. Ending persistent poverty, respecting all people and our planet”.
As the world recovers from Covid19 pandemic, National Orientation Agency(NOA), Abia State wants to build forward together towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of eliminating extreme poverty and leaving no one behind. To build forward together, we need to bring down all barriers of discrimination against people in poverty and build moral and legal policies anchored on human rights and dignity. It ensures that people living in poverty are encouraged and supported and actively involved in decisions directly affecting their lives. By so doing, they can also contribute to our communities, societies and the world at large.
