MY TAKE ON THE PRIEST WHO GOT MARRIED AND THE BASELESS CALLS FOR THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TO CHANGE HER POLICY ON CELIBACY

Jude Chijioke Ndukwe

Marriage is not an alternative to celibacy. We have many cases where married pastors of other denominations still sleep with other female members of their church including married women, and even those outside their Church. Should the pentecostals/protestants also review their laws guiding marriage to allow their pastors marry more than one wife so that they stop having secret affairs?

Sir Jude Chijioke Ndukwe

If celibacy was the problem and marriage was the solution, why are some married men and women still sleeping with partners that are not their spouses? Celibacy is never the problem, marriage is never the solution. The will to stick to your vows either as a priest or a married fellow, coupled with prayers for God’s grace are. Even our Lord Jesus Christ at a point, became weary and He prayed, “Lord, if it is possible, let this cup pass over me. Not my will, but let your will be done.” And He continued with the determination to finish the race, and He did.

Priests at some point can become weary; a lot of married people at some point also become weary. There’s nothing irregular about that. But like our Lord Jesus Christ, people should always pray and ask for grace to carry on and finish the race as called. Like our Lord Jesus Christ, they should not follow the weakness of the flesh but the willingness of the Spirit.

Judas Iscariot was the treasurer of the Apostles. He was known as a thief who was always stealing from the purse of the Apostles (please, see John 12:4-6). But despite this known fact, Jesus did not change him nor did He change the rules governing their purse. There are reasons for ensuring that regulations are not changed just to suit the deviant behaviours of a few.

The priesthood is a calling of choice. The Catholic Church in Her wisdom has made provisions for those who want to ‘defect’ from it into marriage so that no one is forced to remain a priest against their will. Such provisions are made so that they remain Catholics under the guidance of other priests and Bishops without being stigmatised or pushed outside the flock entirely.

In the Catholic Church, two of the seven sacraments of the Church are Holy Order (for those who want to go into priesthood), and Holy Matrimony (for those who want to be in marriage). The choice is that of members to make.
